We at Kuranda are a family-owned small business in Glen Burnie, Maryland. We manufacture a dog bed that we believe is the most resistant to chewing but also is a safe and supportive resting place for your dog. We even have a best in class warranty to back it up.

"Ok, but why should I take your advice?"

Even if you don't end up purchasing one of our beds, we hope we can provide you with some helpful information to aid in your search.

What to look for when shopping chew proof dog beds

First, let's address the elephant in the room. If your dog is persistent enough, no dog bed that is designed to also be comfortable for will be truly "chew proof".

When we at Kuranda call a bed chew proof, it's an indication that it was designed to remove chewable elements wherever possible and use durable materials throughout.

So having said that, what are some attributes to look for when shopping for a chew proof dog bed? We outline them below and then discuss Kuranda's answer to each question.

Bed Components & Materials

What are the components that make up the bed (legs, corners, feet, fabric, etc.) made of?

How easily can the components be damaged? If they are damaged, is the bed put into a state where it is harmful to my dog?

Do the corners contain any hardware like exposed screw heads that may scratch your pet?

Build Quality

Is the bed constructed in a way to support a dog's weight over time? Are the any stress points in its construction?

How does the fabric of the bed connect to the frame of the bed? Does it connect in a way where your dog could scratch at the edge of the fabric to fray or tear it?

Does the bed design feature any areas or components where the dog's paws could become stuck?

Warranty & Support

Does the seller or manufacturer offer any kind of warranty to stand up to chew proof claims? Does the seller make exceptions that rule out some parts but not others?

Does the seller or manufacturer charge a shipping fee to replace the bed in the event of a warranty replacement?

For returns, does the seller or manufacturer charge a restocking fee?

Will the seller or manufacturer take returns if the dog just won’t lie on the bed?

Does the seller or manufacturer offer replacement parts should I need to refresh/repair the bed over time?

At Kuranda we consider all of these elements essential in making a bed that will stand up to aggressive chewers and provide a quality long-term investment for you the shopper. Read on to see the Kuranda approach to each of those elements.

Questions about Kuranda Bed Components & Materials

What are the components that make up the Kuranda bed (legs, corners, feet, fabric, etc.) made of?

Kuranda Dog Bed rails, corners and feet are made of durable poly-resin or aluminum depending on the bed you choose. For the most chew proof option, choose aluminum.

Kuranda offers several different fabric types for different applications. For the most destructive dogs, we recommend choosing our Heavy Duty 40 oz. vinyl.

It is easy to clean, exceptionally durable and the most popular choice of our professional customers as well.

How easily can the components be damaged?

Kuranda's bed components are composed of durable materials that resist damage from chewing dogs.

If the bed components are damaged, is the bed put into a state where it is harmful to my dog?

Some of our fabrics designed for other applications (for example: pass-through mesh for incontinent dogs) can be easily destructed. However, by choosing a stronger fabric like the 40 oz. Heavy Duty vinyl, persistent chewers will have a much more difficult time trying to shred the fabric and leave behind parts that could be swallowed.

Unlike with pillow-style dog beds, the Kuranda bed is not stuffed with filling that could be harmful if exposed and swallowed by an aggressive chewer.

Do the corners contain any hardware like exposed screw heads that may scratch your pet?

When attached properly, screw heads will recess into the corner caps so your dog cannot scratch against the side of the screw head. Plastic feet insert into the bottom of the legs to make removal by a pawing dog more difficult than a cap covering the leg would.

Questions about Kuranda Bed Build Quality

Is the Kuranda bed constructed in a way to support a dog's weight over time?

Are the any stress points in its construction?

Our recommended Aluminum frame is rated to hold dogs up to 250 lbs. securely. The proprietary in-rail fabric design allows the weight of the dog to be distributed along all of the rails and prevents uneven stress on the corners of the bed.

How does the fabric of the Kuranda bed connect to the frame of the bed?

Does it connect in a way where your dog could scratch at the edge of the fabric to fray or tear it?

The fabric of the Kuranda Dog Bed is enclosed securely in the frame rail and corner. While the dog can scratch at the fabric itself, there is no access to the edge of the fabric where tears can more easily be started. Competitors will often wrap frames with a fabric in a way that can be easily undone by an active dog.

Does the Kuranda bed design feature any areas or components where the dog's paws could become stuck?

Unlike some competitor's beds, Kuranda beds leave no gaps in the fabric corner area where the dog could get a paw stuck.

"Rottweiler Tested and Approved"

My husband and I wanted to buy an Orthopedic bed for our Rottweiler and we tried several different beds from Petco and online. Bullybeds, Furhaven, and Big Barker all tested and destroyed by our dog. [..] He always chews right before he goes to bed and no chew toy will dissuade him from chewing something soft. He even resorted to to chewing his crate cover when nothing else was available. At my wits end I looked up chew proof beds and found Kuranda!! We were curious to see how he would react to a non-plush bed. He took to it immediately once we put it together!! He jumped right on it and laid down. I was happily surprised.
