Top 5 Benefits of Catios

Posted by Caroline Aro on 04/14/2025

Cat patios – or “catios” – are growing in popularity as pet parents learn more about the benefits of a safe, enclosed outdoor space for their feline companions. These home additions can be a small window add-on, a whole screened patio or anything in between!

Here are some of the top benefits of catios:

  1. Pet Safety & Peace of Mind

Cats are primarily kept inside for their own safety – from cars, wildlife or dogs, poisons (like antifreeze or pesticides), parasites, getting lost or taken. A catio can allow your cat to enjoy some fresh air and nature, without the risks that a free-roaming cat might face. It ensures your cat is always safe and protected while enjoying some outside time.

  2. Protect Wildlife

Cats are natural predators and they don’t fit in the local food chain. Studies have shown that billions of birds are killed each year by outdoor cats. Cats can have a significant negative impact on wildlife in your neighborhood.

  3. Enrichment

Imagine being cooped up in the house 24/7. Even with toys and playtime, it may not be enough for your feline friend. An enclosed outdoor space can provide endless entertainment and enrichment. Depending on the size of your catio, it may give them space to climb, jump and perch while also taking in all the smells, sights and sounds outdoors.

  4. Bonding

If you’re able to build a large enough catio to accommodate space for you, it could be a great opportunity to bond with your cat. Spend some quality quiet time co-existing with your cat in a safe, enclosed catio while taking in the fresh air.

  5. Household Harmony

If you are in a multi-cat household, sometimes tensions and conflict can arise. Catios help reduce stress, as they provide additional space for “alone time” as needed for your pets.
