Shelter Shout Out: Horses of Tir Na Nog
Posted by Caroline Aro on 10/14/2025

We choose one of our ShelterBeds animal welfare organizations each month to highlight in our Shelter Shout Out series. This month, we're featuring Horses of Tir Na Nog. We know what you're thinking... "Why is a dog and cat bed company talking about a horse rescue?". Well not only do Horses of Tir Na Nog rescue horses, but as animal lovers, they have other animal residents including dogs and cats!
"Our goal is to create a safe haven for horses that have few options remaining, thereby ensuring a better quality of life. At Horses of Tir Na Nog, we help build connections between people and horses in the San Diego community, increasing awareness about responsible horse ownership and care through education."
This volunteer-run non-profit works with municipal shelters to rescue "unadoptable" animals who are often facing euthanasia. Many ranch residents have medical issues, have faced abuse, neglect etc. before coming into the care of the wonderful people at Tir Na Nog.

Some of the pups like Barley and Landon are rescued livestock guardian dogs - that means they're extra-large breeds who need tough and comfortable beds! Our Kuranda Beds have given them a safe place to rest and to keep cool during the hot summer months.

Back in 2017, one of the sanctuary's partners, the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services rescued over 100 cats from a hoarding situation at an apartment. Since these cats hadn't had any real human interaction, they were considered semi-feral. After receiving medical care, it turns out many were blind due to a genetic condition. Tir Na Nog took in some of the least adoptable of the group and so this began the construction of The Cat House. Since then, several other cats have been rescued and have formed a special bond with each other in the cattery. They recently received new Kuranda Cat Towers to climb and lounge on!
Amy-Pat at Tir Na Nog says that next up is to test Kuranda beds for the family of pigs from Animal Services. The pigs came in as strays and five piglets were born at the shelter. The family is quickly getting used to the good life at the ranch.
