Shelter Shout Out: Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary
Posted by Caroline Aro on 02/11/2025
This month’s Shelter Shout Out installment is all about a unique organization called Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary (FFCS). For those of you who aren’t familiar, Furball Farm is a 501(c)(3) sanctuary located in Fairbault, Minnesota dedicated to the care of feral cats. At this time, there are over 350 cats in their care! These “Furballs” are provided cage-free refuge, full veterinary care and lots of love from the sanctuary’s volunteers.

“Our Mission: Furball Farm is dedicated to providing a sanctuary for feral cats. Each cat can live out his or her life in a cage free environment, or until he or she is ready for a forever home.”
For starters, what exactly are feral cats? Feral cats are unowned domestic cats who live outdoors, are free-roaming and often live in “colonies”. Whether this manifests as aggression or concealment, feral cats are often resistant to any type of human contact.
Founded by Julie Marvets in 2016, Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary acted as somewhat of a “last resort” for many cats. They would take healthy cats with behavioral issues from local animal control facilities, humane societies, rescues and clinics. If no one else claimed these cats, Julie would take them in and provide sanctuary. Oftentimes, the cats that were deemed “unadoptable” are actually incredibly sweet and loving but just don’t do well in a cage - and we don’t blame them! These cats end up available for adoption from Furball Farm, to hopefully find their loving forever families. All other cats are loved and given the highest quality of care at the Farm.
In addition to the sanctuary aspect, Furball Farm also works to stop the overpopulation of cats; they advocate for pet owners to spay or neuter their pets and offer low-cost spay/neuter services. All of the cats in their sanctuary facility are also spayed or neutered.

All in all, Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary was born of the incredible passion and hard work of some exceptional people. This unique facility also has visiting hours! The next time you’re in Faribault, Minnesota, say hi to the Furballs - their current visiting hours are 1pm - 5pm daily at 3405 220th Street East, Faribault, MN 55201. Be sure to check for more information and current visitor requirements with the sanctuary before your trip!
