What are “Dogs in Yellow”?

Some dogs are more anxious or reactive than others. As a visual cue, many pet owners will outfit their pups in yellow – whether it’s a bandana, a collar, a vest etc. to communicate their dogs need for a bit of space.

Dog in Yellow Day was started by Sarah Jones, the founder of My Anxious Dog. Sarah’s dog, Bella, was attacked by another dog when she was a puppy. This left Bella with a lot of anxiety, which manifested into reactivity to other dogs; on the surface, lunging or growling out of fear appears to be pure aggression. With that comes the stigma and judgement from others, as if you’re irresponsible for owning such a vicious dog and taking it out in public. In reality, most people just don’t know or understand that most “vicious” dogs like this are really just scared. They may have been through something similar to Bella, but regardless, they deserve more understanding and compassion.

… and so, #DogsInYellow was born. Sarah Jones’ intention was to raise awareness and spread awareness to unknowing dog owners that “all our #DogsInYellow want and need is some space, and then the world feels much less frightening.”
