My small boarding kennel is outdoors and this past summer Texas recorded record heat over 100 degrees for more than 30 days straight. I only had a misting system to help the dogs stay cool. Then I had a gread idea that worked great – I froze water in plastic milk jugs, placed them under the kuranda beds and the dogs quickly discovered the cool spot and spent a cool afternoon snoozing on their beds. Owners were impressed and felt better about leaving their dogs with me. Now I have an air conditioned building for those extra hot days, but will still use the ice beds for those who don’t like crates.

Jeanne & Marty Poe pose by their cat creation
We had a pleasant surprise while visiting the Cecil County SPCA the other day. Jeanne Deeming, the Director told us how Katie Poe, who runs the Cat room wanted to do something special. Her Father In Law, Marty Poe came up with a great idea that utilizes our Kuranda beds! He went to work and came up with some of the nicest Cat Beds we’ve ever seen!

I finally broke down and ordered a raised outdoor dog bed for Mr. Mattie. It’s called a Kuranda bed – they use them a lot in kennels as they’re very durable and easy to clean. Of course, I had to order the XXL as the 85lb one just wasn’t going to cut it for a Great Dane!
One thing we learned on this past weekend’s camping trip was that Mattie doesn’t like to lay down in dirt. This way he can still be outside in the campsite with us, and have a place to sleep too!
(It must be a hormonal thing (low progesterone or estrogen or something), because it seems the older the girls get (and the less they need us), the more we’ve reverted to babying the dog!)
